The lure of the small screen

Show and Tell
“In the future, everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes”.
Andy Warhol
And what better way to achieve this 15 minutes of fame than via TV. It’s like a magnet and it attracts one and all. The list includes actors, politicians, businessmen, activists, dacoits, chefs, and even yoga gurus and spiritual leaders. No one can stay away from it. From Anna Hazare to Baba Ramdev, all have succumbed at some time or the other. And as time goes by more and more unlikely faces are popping up.
Some time back it was called the idiot box. Whoever named it is sure eating his words now. Because this medium is one of the smartest and most efficient communication tools we have today. And the power it yields is phenomenal.
Last week saw an unprecedented number of celebs use this medium to promote either themselves or their upcoming films. When Chef Vikas Khanna replacedAkshay Kumar on Master Chef 2 as host cum judge it was an interesting turn of events. The highly acclaimed chef has come down all the way from New York for the show. The show will go on air from October 15 and will also have many other celebs making appearances.
When Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal at the peak of their battle against corruption came as guests on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs on Zee there was no doubt in the mind that TV has indeed grown very powerful in the past few years. And what better testimony to this fact than the recent music launch of one of the biggest films of our times. When Shahrukh decided to launch the music of his upcoming film Ra.Onehe collaborated with Star Plus. It is the first time that the rights of a music launch have been sold to a TV channel. And saluting the power of the medium SRK wooed TV bahus Ragini KhannaPooja GorSanaya IraniGiaa Maanek andDeepika Singh. He shared the stage with them and even danced with them as Ragini Khanna and Vivan Bhatena hosted the event.
It is no secret that it was KBC season 1 that helped Amitabh Bachchan get out of the financial mess he had landed in after floating his company ABCL. The show not only helped him sail through his financial woes but also helped him repackage his image which had taken a beating. And today the legend is back with season 5 of the show.
More and more people understand the influence of this medium. From small towns to the dream city of Mumbai everyone is ready to go out on a limb to be seen on the small screen. Some use it for political gains whilst some for personal gains and many for commercial gains. This is amply evident when a film is due for release and everybody from the director to the actor to the producer make appearances on reality shows or even soaps to promote their product.
It’s ironical that many of those whom we now see on TV were the same people who at one time thumbed their nose at it. Television has resurrected many and given them a new lease of life. Actors who were completely down and out are back in the business after making appearances on shows.
In fact many have even used the medium to whitewash their old images. One-time dacoit Seema Parihar was seen in Bigg Boss after which she is now back on TV on a show called Prayaschit on Sony. The reformed criminal has used this medium to her complete advantage. Even controversy’s favourite children Rakhi SawantMikaDolly BindraKashmira ShahRaja ChaudharySambhavana Sethand now Poonam Pandey have done bizarre things to make it to TV headlines.
There have been many cases wherein people have used chat shows, talk shows and other such forums to make a point or to say something. Apart from these celebs even wannabes are now using this medium to find life partners (Swayamvars) and even to get married. Some even use it to find dates and some as a detective to spy on cheating partners (Emotional Atyachar).
The lure of television is proving hard to resist even for the likes of Aamir Khan. We hear that he’s now ready to jump onto the bandwagon with a chat show based on social issues. The lure of the small screen has even ensnared Hrithik Roshanwho now sits as judge on the dance reality show Just DanceSanjay Dutt too will debut as host on Bigg Boss this year.
Such is the power of TV and the dreams it sells.

Add to that, Shraddha Sharma doesn’t even bat an eyelid before flaunting her well-endowed body.
If this was not enough, then Pooja Missra, who is known for her fights with other contestants, will be seen yelling and fighting with everyone in the house in tonight’s episode.

Ashvini Yardi's 'Color'ful journey

Ashvini Yardi with Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt
TV veteran Ashvini Yardi, who called it quits as Colors programming head today, is following in the footsteps of many TV actors and professionals who have hopped on to the film bandwagon as a natural creative progression.
On television, she has been behind some classic programming moves at both her current charge and on Zee TV – which she creatively steered before she joined Colors.
At Zee TV she opted for shows such as Saat Phere, Sailaab, Kasamh Se, Sarrkar, Teen Bahuraaniyaan, Banoo Main Teri DulhannGhar ki Lakshmi Betiyaan,Banegi Apni Baat, among several others. She also conceptualized the cult singing reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge and Lil’ Champs before leaving to join Colors.
At Colors, she brought in path-breaking shows such as UttaranBalika Vadhu,Bigg BossKhatron Ke KhiladiVeer ShivajiLaado, et al and took the new channel zooming to the No 1 spot for a few months last year, giving Star Plus senior management sleepless nights. She took the bold step of shifting the programming paradigm along with Colors CEO Rajesh Kamath by basing her fiction shows on rural themes when most channels were focusing on urban storylines. She highlighted sensitive social issues like child marriage, female infanticide and farmers' suicides. Additionally, she also brought on reality shows that were strong on the adventure, fear quotient and human emotions – which worked very well for Colors.
Even as she announced her resignation, she was helping Colors bounce back to the No 2 slot which it had conceded to Sony for more than five weeks. And that was primarily because of her support for an initiative to bring in an all-female-with-one-male cast on Bigg Boss 5 worked well with audiences. She was also instrumental in bringing in Sanjay Dutt to partner Salman Khan on the show.
The lady, who could have very well been on screen herself, has built very strong relationships with the likes of Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan,Abhishek BachchanAkshay KumarPreity ZintaFarah KhanPriyanka Chopra,Juhi Chawla, Sajid Khan, Karan Johar, Ekta Kapoor, and scores of other technicians and producers.
Now she will be bringing some of those relationships to bear when she makes movies for herself with Viacom 18 Pictures which is a sister outfit of the company which runs Colors.
Get ready for some magic to hit the big screen!

Shahrukh's two faces in CLT20 final

Shahrukh Khan
Well, well, TV audiences got to see the two faces of the Badshah during the Nokia CLT20 final which Mumbai Indians won quite convincingly last night. Shahrukh Khan was seen chatting away animatedly with Mumbai Indians owner Nita Ambani and her son Akash in the Mumbai Indians dugout during the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s attempt at besting the Mumbai Indians low score. He was constantly at her side and seemed to enjoy a bonhomie with her. This was despite the fact that his team had been knocked out of the tournament.
Cut to a few overs later, and Shahrukh was seen in the stands with Dr Vijay Mallya and he just mumbled a few words to the RCB owner and then was seen sitting mutedly next to him.
When asked by an ESPN commentator what he was doing there, Shahrukh said: “I am here as the Nokia CLT20 brand ambassador. I support both the teams as I have to be neutral. In the first half Royal Challengers will do well, in the second half, it will be the turn of the MI.”
Later Mrs Ambani revealed that she Shahrukh is a very dear friend and that his support meant a lot to her when he was by her side in the dugout. And what must have pleased her even more was the fact that his prediction turned out right and her team won!!!

VJ Siddharth Bhardwaj to enter Bigg Boss house?

Siddharth Bhardwaj
The makers of Bigg Boss season 5 is shifting from the initial strategy of an all-female-with-one-male cast. After climbing the TRP chart with this particular ploy the channel have now decided to bring in more male contestants in the house. After Amar Upadhyay, the latest news that is floating in from the sets of Bigg Bossis that MTV VJ Siddharth Bhardwaj might be the next hot bod to enter the house.
A reliable source informed that Siddharth is entering to create more drama in the show. He will be the third male contestant in the house apart from Shakti Kapoorand Amar Upadhyay.
Interestingly, Siddharth’s good friend Sakshi Pradhan was part of Bigg Bossseason 4. It would not come as a surprise if he grabbed some much-necessary tips from Sakshi to survive in the house.
Siddharth shot to fame after winning the dating reality show on MTV, Splitsvilla. He was later seen in shows like MTV Stripped, Gone in 60 Seconds, One Short Plotand Wassup and Roadies 8.0.
His entry would certainly mean more tears, tantrums and tamasha in the show!

She however refused to confirm the track that is going to unravel on screen apart from saying with a sweet smile that it will be “an interesting twist.”

Rupali Ganguly and Vishal Singh in DJ's next on Sony?

Rupali Ganguly and Vishal Singh
How can one forget the typical middle class housewife Monisha Sarabhai of the popular comedy show Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai on Star One? The character was played with ease by talented Rupali Ganguly. Similarly, if you loved the seriesDekh Bhai Dekh on Sony then it would have been difficult to miss the innocence, charm and spontaneity of Sanju aka Vishal Singh. And the good news that is floating in is that the gifted duo will be seen together in DJ’s A Creative Unit’s new show on Sony.

Aman Verma gets the axe

Aman Verma
Aman Verma who has had his share of success and controversies is making headlines again. The latest buzz in the tinsel town is that the actor is furious over his role being chopped in his recently released movie U R My Jaan. The movie was released alongside Mausam and Speedy Singhs.
Aman has impressed viewers with his acting skills. He managed to make a place for himself in the world of television and Bollywood industry. The actor has proved his mettle in films like Baghban, Jaan-e-maan and he was recently seen in Arun Govil’s latest U R My Jaan.
However, there is a sting in the tale. A source close to the actor revealed that the actor is left shocked after his role got chopped in U R My Jaan. His role was inspired from Jason Alexander’s role in the movie Pretty Woman.
The source further informed that the producer and director of the movie Arun Govil (not to be confused with veteran actor Arun Govil) does not belong to the film industry and that is the reason he did not put much effort to promote the film. Aman was left fuming as not only his role got downsized but all efforts and money put in making the film went down the drain.
We tried contacting Aman Verma but he remained unavailable. We hope Aman gets over the trauma and gets back to entertaining viewers.

Divya Bhatnagar quits Geet

Divya Bhatnagar and Khushbu Thakkar
Rumour mills have been constantly talking about Star One’s prime time showGeet Hui Sabse Parayi going off air. However, the latest dope is that the show will stay and is gearing up for some changes. Divya Bhatnagar who plays the character of Preeto in the show has been replaced. Divya’s character will be henceforth played by Khushbu Thakkar who was last seen in SAB TV’s Mrs. Tendulkar.
A little birdie from the sets informs, “Divya who is also seen in Imagine’s Sawaare Sabke Sapne Preeto was not able to manage her shooting schedule and there were some date issues. Hence the production team of Geet decided to replace her. The upcoming track will focus on role-reversal wherein the men of the house Dev (Samir Sharma) and Lucky (Ahwaan Kumar) will perform household chores and Nandini (Melanie Pais) and Preeto will handle office work.”
When contacted Divya Bhatnagar said, “I can’t comment on this. All I can say is that I might soon quit the show as I am not being able to manage my shooting schedule.”
As they say one man’s loss is another man’s gain. Well in this case, it’s a woman.

Kuch Toh Log Kahenge does a Dil To Pagal Hai

Mohnish Behl and Kritika Kamra
TV shows are increasingly treading the filmy way. Director’s Kut’s latest offeringKuch Toh Log Kahenge on Sony is nothing less than a 70 mm film as its plot is replete with all the necessary filmy ingredients. The show depicts a heart-warming love story between people of two different generations. And to make the show spicier the makers have decided to introduce a track similar to a popular Bollywood movie in the upcoming episodes.
As already seen in the show Nidhi (Kritika Kamra) is thinking not to continue with her career as a doctor but she is also having second thoughts about her decision. As the story will progress romance will bloom between Ashutosh (Mohnish Behl) and Nidhi.
A reliable source informed that in the upcoming episodes, the show will have a shopping mall sequence wherein Nidhi and Ashutosh will end up shopping in the same shop in the mall. Like the famous sequence from the cult movie Dil Toh Pagal Hai they will try out clothes in adjoining trial rooms.
Once they are done buying clothes they will bump into each other and their bags will get exchanged. Nidhi will buy a saree and Ashutosh will purchase a tie. Even after their bags get exchanged they will be unaware that the stuffs belong to each other, added the source.
We talked to Kritika Kamra who confirmed the track.
This particular sequence will be aired on 14 October, 2011.

Gaurav Gera in SAB TV's Santa Banta aur Lambretta and Ravi Rai's Jhumru

Gaurav Gera
Gaurav Gera is going places. The affable actor who shot to fame with his role Nandu in Sony’s Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin epitomizes humour and intelligence.
Our sources inform that Gaurav will soon be seen in a short film titled Santa Banta Aur Lambretta. The short film will be produced by Shri Adhikari Brothers. This is the production house’s first venture into short films.
The film which is a breezy situational comedy of 90 minutes will be directed by successful writer-director-producer Ravi Rai. Ravi Rai is known for soaps likeSailaab, Thoda Hai Thode Ki Zaroorat Hai, Sparsh, among others. Gaurav will play the lead in the movie, added the source.

Manasvi Vyas bags a wacky role in Ek Hazaron Mein

Manasvi Vyas bags a wacky role in Ek Hazaron Mein

After playing the evil Aparajita on Star One's youth show, Manasvi will turn positive with Star Plus' next...

Manasvi essayed two back to back completely negative characters in Star One's Miley Jab Hum Tum and ColorsPhulwa respectively.

In her third major innings, Manasvi Vyas bags a light hearted and crazy role in Cinevistaas' Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri Behna Hain. The show is all set to hit the TV screens from October 3rd.

A source talking about her character reveals, "Manasvi will portray Kadambari Chachi in the show. She is only one from the entire family who is less educated but pretends to be one amongst all. Being a movie buff, she dons different get ups of various characters from different movies for every occasion of the family. She will always be seen doing a fancy dress sorts and has been paired opposite Anupam Bhattacharya."

Manasvi Vyas states, "Initially I was not at all interested to take up this up as the role was of a Chachi which sounds very dull for me. But the character is very interesting which made me take up the role."

On a side note, Indu Sharma will play the male lead's mother who confirmed her presence on the show.

With Manasvi joining such an interesting cast, this will surely be an eye grabber. Don't forget to spot her in a hatke avtaar..

Bigg Boss 4 - 1st Week Review

Bigg Boss 4 - 1st Week ReviewIt's been a week now since Salman Khan and Bigg Boss 4 went on air. And, we are having mixed feelings about the show, for sure. First things first, the opening episode was a downer. Though Salman tried to pep up the proceedings with his goofy antics and candid humour, it still left us cold. To make matters worse, the 14 contestants were not who we had expected, certainly not after the kind of names (read Rajesh Khanna, Sangeeta Bijlani, Bhagyashree, Saurav Ganguly etc) that did the media rounds. Daku 'haseena' (well, not quite) Seema Parihar or Bunty 'beep beep' Chor certainly didn't make the cut!
Sigh! But here we are looking at Bigg Boss after week 1.

The Desh Ka Aadesh and Aakhri Salaam episodes were full on fun and masti. As we had expected after the thanda first few episodes, Salman had to pull up his socks, vest, everything to round up the week with a bang. And that he did, whether it was asking cheeky questions to the evictee (Abbas Kazmi) or making him dance with firangi extras or even making the housemates do silly things like running in a circle like a train. All that did make up for the lost zing in the initial episodes.

To have Bejan Daruwala predict the future of the contestants was a good idea though we wish the channel could have saved him for the last couple of weeks.

On the flipside, it's dj vu as contestants seem to follow the template of contestants of those of earlier seasons. So you have Sameer Soni aka Mr Cool and Calm, a la Rahul Roy, Manoj Tiwariwith his pearls of wisdom and endearing smile (as opposed to his boisterous Bhojpuri colleague Ravi Kissen or the short-tempered, wicked Raja Chaudhary), Sara Khan as the damsel in distress (she sure knows to flutter her eyelashes and play the 'babe in the woods'), Seema Parihar sharing her 'jungle' anecdotes laced with a tale or two about her poverty and inability to educate herself, Rahul Bhatt probably still trying to figure out what he's in for (we feel, his dad, Mahesh Bhatt with his bare-all life-stories would have been a better bet), Veena Malik or Rakhi Sawant of Pakistan, has already had a spat with Hrishant Goswami, not to forget her little pow-wow with Shweta Tiwari, Shweta doing her kabhi bechari kabhi chulbuli act (trying hard to be everything she is probably not!), Aanchal Kumar (the striking sweetie with a stunning wardrobe has already shed a few tears over Kazmi's exit, we wonder why), Ashmit Patel (being daddy to little Sara and eyeing Aanchal, all in a day's work), Splitsvila winner, Sakshi Pradhan  (well, whatever) and last but not the least, Begum Nawazish Ali flitting from her yin to her yang avatar…

The contestants are a mixed bunch, alright but none of them seem to be themselves, all are playing 'roles' they are required to play, or attempting to play the way their predecessors did. And that's the reason why you get that 'maine yeh pehle bhi kahin dekha hai' feeling! So we are neither shaken nor stirred when a Veena Malik recounts her story of abuse and insult or when Shweta tells us how she has been working from the age of 12 (baby, some girls start even younger, so spin us another yarn!). Worse, everyone seems to be in a hurry to milk their '15 minutes inside the House' by narrating sad, personal, 'shocking' stories, lest someone else walks away with public sympathy and votes…

Well, we surely hope, they have some other tricks too in their bag they can unleash on the hapless viewers in later weeks. For now, it's Salman and Salman alone who is the big draw ofBigg Boss 4.

Imagine brings The Voice to India...

Imagine brings The Voice to India...

After travelling to America and Holland, 'The Voice' promises to make it big in India...

Imagine has always been proficient in experimenting with concepts when it comes to reality shows. After creating shows like Swayamvar, Zor Ka JhatkaRakhi Ka Insaafand Gajab Desh Ki Ajab Kahaaniyaan, they are now coming up with a new singing reality show, The Voice.

For the uninitiated, the show is an adaptation of the American reality show with the same name which has been immensely popular. It was later adapted in Holland and termed as The Voice of Holland.

The show is the brainchild of Miditech who made interesting shows like Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachaao and Roadies.

Nikhil Madhok, Senior Director – Marketing and Communications, Turner General Entertainment Networks India Pvt. Ltd speaks about the format of the show, "The show will have the original format wherein the first round will have blind auditions in which the judges will not see the contestants but will be selected only based on the voice. This is the main aspect of the show which makes it different from the rest of the reality shows. Also according to the format, the students can select their coaches and are free to change the coach even during the middle of the show.  The selection of judges is in process as they will then be the coaches of the contestants under whom they will be trained."

He further adds, "We have been working hard on it for a long time and are planning to launch the show by early 2012. This is one of the biggest projects of Imagine TV and we are expecting the show to excel in the genre of singing reality like it had in other countries."

With another singing reality show on television, will Imagine be successful in creating the magic?

Tension to brew in Navya

Tension to brew in Navya

After a fresh air of happiness, Navya and Anant will see undergo some tensed moments...

Last episode of Siddharth Tiwary'sNavya on Star Plus' saw Anant's family spotting Navya (Soumya Seth) and her friends along with Ananth (Shaheer Sheikh) and Ranbir (Rehan Sayed) loitering around in the night.

Though it was a prank played by Anant and Ranbir on Navya, it came out as a bad impression in front of Anant's family which will lead to hardcore tension between Navya and Anant in the future.

This might even strain their marriage and create vast differences.A source informs, "As of now Baba and Dadi have seen Navyalingering in the night which will make them rethink about their marriage. But as the families are ready to get them married, it is a hard task for Baba to break the relation. Therefore Baba will keep a condition in front of Navya's family so that they themselves take the proposal back. And on the other hand even if Navya gets married to Anant its better to unite them as soon as possible because of their behaviour."

Emphasizing on the condition, the source states, "Seeing Navya's financial condition, Baba will put the condition of getting them married within a month or breaking the relationship."

Although we hear that Navya's family will succumb to the conditions which will indeed lead to Anant and Navya's wedding.

We tried contacted Soumya Seth and she asserts, " Yes, baba will put a condition but I can't divulge any further details."

We are sure that this track will definitely keep the audience wanting for more!

Rati Pandey declines Star Ya Rockstar...

Rati Pandey declines Star Ya Rockstar...

Due to prior commitments, the actress had to pass off the recently launched singing reality show.

Zee TV's Star Ya Rockstar kicked off last week with a bang and the show has indeed proved to be a great platform for actors to showcase their singing talents. A little birdie tells us that Rati Pandey was also approached for the show but the actress chose her upcoming drama Hitler Didi over crooning songs.

TellyBuzz contacted Rati Pandey who said, "I was approached for Star Ya Rockstar but I couldn't take it up as I was shooting for Hitler Didi."

Rati is playing the main lead and hence it was impossible for her to take up this project. So any regrets? "I do not regret at all because my priority is Hitler Didi and as far as Star Ya Rockstar is concerned, I might do the second season (laughs)," she clarifies.

All we can say is Rati's fans are glad that she is back on television, be it as a singer or as Hitler Didi.

Swati Kapoor does a run-ning act!

Swati Kapoor does a run-ning act!

Swati Kapoor makes her entry in a similar fashion but in two diverse shows...

Swati Kapoor who made her debut with Star Plus's Kaali- Ek Pariksha has now stepped intoHamari Saas Leela which airs on Colors. Although she faced some problems regarding her entry, today's episode already seen the actress making her presence on the show.

We couldn't help but notice that her entry on this show bares complete resemblance with her entrance in Kaali.

Swati too confesses, "I don't know why but my opening scene is always the one where I am shown running. I start a new project with this kind of exercise due to which my first day is always exhausting."

"In Kaali, I was shown jogging in the morning and in this show, I was running due to a challenge that was given to me. But the point remains the same. Though I was shown running only for a few minutes, the actual shoot takes hours for us to make it right. So my first scene in every show makes me run in some way or the other."

We hope this running proves lucky for you Swati!
